MORNING SESSION - 12 MIDDAY - 2 PM:  

FREE IMPROVISATION IN ACAPELA GROUP SETTNG

Singers develop skills in leading, listening, harmony, pitch, improvisation and rhythm, through completing a  series of exercises which are freely improvised in an Acapella Group Setting.

(These exercises were developed by vocalist-performance artist,  Rhiannon Watson or have been modified, expounded upon in acapella improv development workshops led and hosted by vocalist-music therapist, Kate Richard Gellar at her Soho loft "Sing For Yourself" series.

•    CIRCLE SONG (medium to large group - up to 20):

•    THREE FACED FRONT (using 3 singers only):

•    TRAVELING TRIO A (using group of 6 or more) TRAVELING TRIO B

•    TRADING (using group of 6 or more):

•    CREATING IMPROVISED ENSEMBLE PIECE TO SOLO OVER - Teacher leader conducted (using a group of 12 or more):  Groups are divided into groups of 3, 4 or 5 (dependent on # of participants)

These are ideas Chris has developed specifically for the "vocalist as band leader" and the art of giving a dynamic and powerful performance. 

Depending on the the general level of the students, Chris will choose specific exercises to work through.  There will be a specific time set aside for students to perform and have their work critiqued.

VOCALIST as COMPLETE MUSICIAN 

These are mainly piano based exercises (for non-playing and playing vocalists) - integrating theory, ear training and improvisation.

We will be working with a "smart board" using exercises created in Sibelius. Students will also be given handouts in PDF format. Chris will take students through a series of exercises, internalizing the methodology, then moving to chord changes and then onto singing over tunes.

•    CHORD- SCALE STRUCTURES - INTEGRATING MELODIC, HARMONIC, DIMINISHED and         PENTATONIC SCALES WITH CHORD USAGE
•    TETRACHORDS  - INTEGRATING THE USE OF TETRACHORDS TO REINFORCE SCALE MEMORY & IMPROVE IMPROVISATION SKILLS
•    PARALLEL AND DERIVATIVE USE OF SCALES
•    DOMINANT 7 CHORD QUALITIES AND SCALE USAGE: ALTERED, DIMINISHED (1/2 WHOLE) etc.,
•    THE BE BOP SCALE
•    PENTATONIC SCALE USES - USING CHORD PROGRESSIONS from CHRIS'  "NEW DAY"
•    COMMON TONES - CHORD RELATIONSHIPS - (eg 1/2 Diminished & Maj 7, #11 Chords)
•    TURN AROUNDS:  SHORT and LONG TAGS
